Victor Hugo's classic tale of pursuit and revenge in which Jean Valjean, a handsome young woodcutter, is cruelly sentenced to jail for stealing a loaf of bread he took to feed his starving family.

Still, two novels never leave our awareness. Every so often a new film version arrives on one of these. And Les Miz was an extremely successful musical.

I love both novels. I have read Notre Dame many times cover to cover and I have read Miserable twice cover to cover in my youth and recently plus a condensed volume several times.

This is one of four movie versions I have and each has its particular virtue. Here Tony Perkins comes through in flying colors. I saw this way back in my childhood on television, again in my twenties, and once again now in my 40s.

This is one of those films which doesn't get old when watching again in different periods of life and still makes me emotional.

Actors are superb, every single one of them. And the script, the scenery, the transformation after escape, the music, camera angels and closeups - they are all done in the wonderfully romantic style you only find in British movie productions from the 70s like in Alice Adventures in Wonderland and Superman the Movie.

I highly recommend this version for family with children. It moves fast enough and has many good talking points.

So glad to see this polished version available on amazon. The main actor was much too young. His skin was too smooth.

The old age makeup for everyone, especially Jean Valjean, was pretty distracting. Cosette was pretty enough and Fantine horrible looking enough here the makeup crew got it right but I didn't enjoy this version much.

I didn't find much emotion in any of it. Anthony Perkins Norman Bates in Psycho was all right, but had a British-like accent that came and went.

Gavroche had his usual Cockney, and Jean Valjean just a stilted American accent. It's okay for fans of the book, as another adaptation.

Likewise, it doesn't have language to object to, wife beating, or prostitution explicitly shown, so if you want to introduce kids to the story, this is good.

I do like that they spent some time -- probably too much -- on his original crime, his prison life, and his attempted escapes.

But they jumped right from him being freed at the Bishop's house to him being M. Madeline, with no self-reflection at all. One person found this helpful.

Finally got around to watching this version of "Les Miserables ". And you thought I was going to say "eight tiny reindeer", eh?

And so, I guess this review will be, in actuality, a discussion about "Ephraim's Rescue". But so as not to spoil your viewing pleasure, this was a quite good and enjoyable humanistic film without too much religious overtones.

It takes place in the Paris suburb of Montfermeil. The story focuses upon three police in the neighborhood who shoot a local kid.

It is a very complex and deep story looking at the incident from all different perspectives. It makes for a very powerful and important movie.

The story begins with the myth of France. The French national team is playing in the World Cup in and all the local kids rally around the flag.

Huge crowds are in the streets of Paris cheering the team on. That is the image France likes to portray of itself as a multinational society, but the truth is like any country where there are deep fissures based upon race, class, locations, etc.

The movie begins by introducing the Montfermeil neighborhood and all the characters in it. There is Corporal Ruiz who just transferred into the area and his two compatriots that patrol the area.

There are all the local kids whose families come from Africa and the Middle East who hang out in the parks and the apartments.

There is the local mayor, the Muslim Brotherhood who police the neighborhood and try to keep the kids in line, there is a circus run by gypsies, and many others.

As a result, the police are just about instilling fear in the community. Into this milieu comes the incident.

Ruiz and his squad catch the kid but are attacked by his compatriots leading one of the police to shoot Issa with a flash bang gun.

The incident is filmed by another boy with a drone and the squad goes after him next. The police, the mayor, a store owner who is a devout Muslim all get drawn in.

The situation is explosive and works out in totally unexpected ways. It highlights all the different members of the community, and how they interact and clash with each other.

They are the most vulnerable ignored by the adults and harassed by the police. They have no voice, but they are going to be heard this time.

It resonates across countries and cultures and could have happened in any big urban area from England to America to Brazil or any number of other places.

I had read about the slums at the edges of Paris, crowded with immigrants surviving on the edge, and a very gritty lifestyle.

And that they burst into riots at intervals is captured nicely in this movie. One covers three police as if the movie is a documentary.

One has Ruiz, who seems to have somewhat of a conscience, Givada, who simply has lost it, and Chris, who wants to cover things up. For most of the movie, one is a spectator to their work during a day in the life of each.

Then, near the end of the movie, each of the characters goes to their homes, and one is given an insight into their home life, which really hits hard.

Then, they go back on patrol, and an ambush is laid for them. One just knows things are not going to turn out well, although the movie ends before that can be known for sure.

There are really few movies that capture the gritty underside of society so well. Pixote comes to mind. I rarely give 5 stars, but this movie captures what the director intended for the subject matter.

This film is a must-see.

There are really few movies that capture the gritty underside of society so well. Pixote comes to mind. I rarely give 5 stars, but this movie captures what the director intended for the subject matter.

This film is a must-see. Its strength lies in the screenplay and the acting. This could easily have been a run of the mill angry cop story in an impoverished neighbourhood, but instead, by tracing out the effects of certain attitudes and actions, it creates a chain of cause-and-effect that beautifully traces out the relationship between order and anarchy, and the generation of violence in society.

What happens when the policeman, who is supposed to embody and establish law and order, violates this same order?

What do the innocent the miserables here do? The true coup de grace in this film is its focus on the children, usually treated as mute or passive spectators in cinema.

By focusing on children, their treatment at the hands of violent adults, and their subsequent reaction, the film shows us an ultimate tragedy where the innocence of childhood is perverted, and a new cycle of violence and aggression is created.

The film may be based in a poor Parisian suburb, but the questions and themes it raises are universal. Where does violence come from, how does it spread, where does it lead?

And what is our relationship to our future generations? How do we raise them? If we can love our own children and be patient with them, why not the same with others'?

If you are looking for a film that challenges you, makes you uncomfortable and risks looking at the world a different way, you will not regret seeing this film.

There are only bad cultivators. While it does not suggest solutions, it warns of the dangers that lack of mutual respect and trust can bring.

I find it an effort to watch any film with subtitles. No matter how good the film is I just switch it off. There wasn't 0 stars so I had to pick 1 star.

If I wanted to read a movie, I would've picked up a book! Doggone it! I'm old! Wait a minute! I think I'll watch it, again, right now!

But first, I have to shout it all over social media, telling the public just how wonderful this movie is!! A dear friend who teaches film at a local college recommended this to me.

It offers an unflinching look at class and race in the modern city in which Victor Hugo's original Les Miserables is set. See all reviews.
